Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the evacuation of UK embassy personnel and their families from Sudan by the British military forces as fighting between competing Sudanese generals continues on Sunday.
“UK armed forces have completed a complex and rapid evacuation of British diplomats and their families from Sudan, amid a significant escalation in violence and threats to embassy staff,” Sunak tweeted.
The prime minister said the government was “continuing to pursue every avenue to end the bloodshed in Sudan and ensure the safety of British nationals remaining in the country.”
According to a tweet from UK defense minister Ben Wallace, “the US, France and other allies” participated in the military action with the UK forces.
More than 1,200 soldiers, Royal Marines, and members of the Royal Air Force participated in the UK mission, he continued.
More than 400 people have died and tens of thousands have been injured in brutal clashes between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary organization, which included tank combat in densely populated Khartoum and airstrikes by fighter jets.
